Após descobrir que o seu pai havia deixado uns papéis no deserto do Namibe que o poderiam ajudar a desvendar um mistério ocorrido em 1923, Ruy Duarte de Carvalho embarca numa jornada épica pelas magníficas paisagens do sul de Angola desde o início até ao fim do século XX. Inspirado na vida de uma das figuras mais fascinantes da literatura lusófona.
Retratando de forma riquíssima um homem multifacetado em busca constante, e explorando o seu génio criativo como escritor, cineasta e antropólogo, o filme aborda temas de identidade e pertença numa Angola colonial e pós-colonial. Através das suas reflexões poéticas e narração envolvente, o contexto histórico, social e cultural destes tempos desenrola-se de forma vívida.
Os Papéis do Inglês teve a sua estreia internacional no Festival Internacional de Cinema de Tóquio, onde foi nomeado para Melhor Filme. O argumento de José Eduardo Agualusa é uma adaptação da trilogia "Os Filhos de Próspero", de Ruy Duarte de Carvalho, e foi nomeado para o Prémio Sophia de Melhor Argumento Adaptado. O filme foi pré-selecionado para candidato de Portugal ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Internacional.

Nadat hij ontdekt dat zijn vader in de Namibwoestijn papieren heeft achtergelaten die hem kunnen helpen een mysterie uit 1923 op te lossen, begint Ruy Duarte de Carvalho aan een epische reis door de prachtige landschappen van Zuid-Angola, van het begin tot aan het einde van de twintigste eeuw. Geïnspireerd door het leven van een van de meest fascinerende figuren uit de Portugeestalige literatuur.
De film geeft een rijk beeld van een veelzijdig man die voortdurend op zoek is en zijn creatieve talent als schrijver, filmmaker en antropoloog verkent. Daarnaast behandelt de film thema´s als identiteit en verbondenheid in het koloniale en postkoloniale Angola. Door zijn poëtische reflecties en meeslepende vertelling komt de historische, sociale en culturele context van deze tijd levendig tot uiting.
Os Papéis do Inglês ging internationaal in première op het Internationale Filmfestival van Tokio, waar het werd genomineerd voor Beste Film. Het scenario van José Eduardo Agualusa is een bewerking van de trilogie “Os Filhos de Próspero” van Ruy Duarte de Carvalho en werd genomineerd voor de Sophia-prijs voor Beste Bewerkte Scenario. De film staat op de shortlist voor de Portugese inzending voor de Oscar van Beste Internationale Speelfilm.
