Na de dood van haar grootvader keert Rosa terug naar het dorp waar ze haar jeugd doorbracht, met de bedoeling om een paar zaken te regelen en snel weer te vertrekken. De ontmoeting met haar voorouderlijk huis en de dorpsbewoners roept echter lang verborgen herinneringen op en een groeiend gevoel van onbehagen. Terwijl ze zich vestigt in het dorp, beginnen zich vreemde gebeurtenissen te ontvouwen: voorwerpen bewegen uit zichzelf, schaduwen fluisteren en mysterieuze figuren lijken haar in de gaten te houden. Tussen de realiteit en de fantasie confronteert Rosa de ‘demonen’ die ze heeft geërfd: stilzwijgen, schuldgevoelens en onopgeloste emoties die van generatie op generatie zijn doorgegeven.
Deze eerste Portugese speelfilm met stop-motionanimatie valt op door zijn ambachtelijke precisie en symbolische beeldtaal. De film verweeft plattelands tradities met hedendaagse thema´s als verdriet, identiteit en verbondenheid, en neemt de kijker mee op een poëtische en emotionele reis.
Na zijn internationale première op het prestigieuze Annecy International Animation Film Festival werd de film onder andere bekroond met de Sophia Award voor beste animatiefilm en op MONSTRA – Lisbon Animation Festival met de jury prijs, waarmee de vitaliteit van de Portugese cinema werd bevestigd. De soundtrack, uitgevoerd door Gaiteiros de Lisboa, is geïnspireerd op traditionele liederen uit Trás-os-Montes en voegt een voorouderlijke resonantie toe. Após a morte do avô, Rosa abandona a rotina agitada da cidade e regressa à remota aldeia da infância, esperando apenas resolver assuntos pendentes e partir rapidamente. No entanto, o reencontro com a casa ancestral e os moradores locais despertam nela lembranças há muito enterradas e uma inquietação crescente. À medida que se instala, estranhos acontecimentos começam a surgir: objetos que se movem sozinhos, sombras que sussurram e figuras misteriosas que parecem observá-la. Entre o real e o imaginado, Rosa confronta os “demónios” herdados – silêncios, culpas e afetos não resolvidos que atravessam gerações.
Primeira longa-metragem portuguesa realizada em animação stop-motion, a obra destaca-se pela minúcia artesanal e por uma estética visual profundamente simbólica. A narrativa entrelaça tradição rural com temas contemporâneos como luto, identidade e pertença, conduzindo o público por uma jornada poética e emocional.
Com estreia internacional no prestigiado Festival de Cinema de Animação de Annecy, e distinguido, entre outros, com o prémio Sophia para melhor filme de animação e com o prémio especial do júri no MONSTRA – Festival de Animação de Lisboa, o filme confirma a vitalidade do cinema português. A banda sonora, interpretada pelos Gaiteiros de Lisboa, inspira-se nos cantos tradicionais transmontanos, reforçando a sua dimensão ancestral. After her grandfather’s death, Rosa returns to the village where she spent her childhood, intending only to settle a few matters and leave quickly. However, the encounter with her ancestral home and the local villagers awakens long-buried memories and a growing sense of unease. As she settles in, strange events begin to unfold: objects move on their own, shadows whisper, and mysterious figures seem to watch her. Between the real and the imagined, Rosa confronts the “demons” she has inherited – silences, guilt, and unresolved emotions passed down through generations.
The first Portuguese feature film made with stop-motion animation, the work stands out for its artisanal precision and deeply symbolic visual language. It weaves rural tradition with contemporary themes such as grief, identity, and belonging, guiding the viewer on a poetic and emotional journey.
With its international premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the film was recognized, among others, with the Sophia Award for Best Animated Feature and with the special jury prize at MONSTRA – Lisbon Animation Festival, affirming the vitality of Portuguese cinema.
