Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw na de afschaffing van de monarchie in Portugal is Alberto, een jonge Portugees afkomstig uit de pro-monarchistische bourgeoisie, gedwongen uit te wijken naar Brazilië. Hij komt te werken op de rubberplantage Paraíso in het hart van de weelderige Amazone jungle, waar de constante strijd om te overleven zijn karakter diepgaand zal beïnvloeden. Acaba por trabalhar no coração da extraordinária selva amazónica, no seringal Paraíso, onde a constante luta pela sobrevivência transformará o seu carácter. Baseado no romance de Ferreira de Castro, esta é uma das maiores produções cinematográficas portuguesas, dirigida pelo realizador de A BOMBA, exibido no Festibérico|03.
